Script Draft: Project 3

BURGUNDI TACKITT (HOST):

TACKITT: If there is one thing any incoming female freshman at Arizona State University would need to be informed about to help her get involved the most, it would most definitely have to be joining a sorority, one chapter in particular; Alpha Phi!

Alpha Phi like all other sororities and fraternities is a social organization of females dedicated to principles like community service and leadership skills. Just at ASU alone we have more than 3000 undergraduate students in more than 50 chapters. Not only does the ASU Greek community support student success, this community helps develop lifelong friendships with people that you would have never thought it was possible to get along with!

Holly Nunns, a new member this year in Alpha Phi

NUNNS: I am so happy I joined Alpha Phi and I’ve made so many friends which makes it 10 times better!!

Greek life is a great way to get involved with the University, but also an amazing way of doing service for your community in fun and creative ways! The more you get involved and obtain leadership roles, the more your life is consumed by this organization. You get back what you put into it and as long as you are willing to participate and attend events, you are guaranteed to love and enjoy the experience. Being apart of something bigger than yourself truly is a unique experience and joining a sorority or fraternity gives you the opportunity to be different and help make changes that YOU want to see.

Without Greek life, I feel as if our university and community would be a dull and boring place. Greek like brings life to our campus and also helps influence people to get involved and help our community however they can. If it weren’t for all the chapters and all they money each one raises for their specific cause, many charities wouldn’t have as much support. Our charitable events make big amounts of money, all donated to good causes.

Sydney Stockton, a new member this year in Alpha Phi briefly explains one of Alpha Phi’s philanthropies and its impact on the community.

STOCKTON: One of Alpha Phis biggest charitable event of the year is its Philanthropy; Red Dress Gala.

TACKITT: Every chapter has it’s own particular cause they focus on raising money for, where as Alpha Phi’s focus is Heart Health in woman and children.

STOCKTON: At the philanthropy all the girls wear a red dress representing heart health, in order to get in you and your family must buy a ticket, which is all donated to our cause, and at our event there is a silent auction consisting of premade baskets and a brand new car! I think altogether we raised 40,000 dollars total this year, which was amazing. It always feels good to give back!

TACKITT: As you can see sororities and fraternities aren’t just about the parties, socials and events, but instead they were founded to make a difference in the community and to ASU. In order to make a difference in the world you have to be the change you want to see, and the only way to make a change is to get involved.

Personally I believe that every one should want to get involved and make a difference in the world we live in, and joining a sorority would be a great step in the right direction.

Alpha Phi really has changed my life in countless ways. It has allowed me to see the campus in a whole new perspective and given me the chance to form so many friendships with all of the girls whom I would have never met if it weren’t for me joining. Being apart of something so precious as a sisterhood is a memory that I will forever hold in my heart. Alpha Phi, or any sorority or fraternity for that matter, truly is an amazing way to give back and it only makes it that much more fun doing it with people you love!

ASU Reacts: Legalization

Burgundi Tackitt: HOST

Hi this is Burgundi Tackitt here, and this is your NPR news

TACKITT: For the first time in history, states Colorado and Washington voted to legalize Marijuana for recreational use since the 2012 election on November 6th.  Although there will be some rules and regulations included with this new law, such as only those 21 or older will be able to buy and keep small amounts of this substance for personal use, supporters of this drug feel that this is a small step in the right direction of taking apart Prohibition one state at a time.

Here is Matthew Campobaso, a student here at ASU, speaking for many groups of students here at the University about how they feel with this new law and what it may eventually lead to

MATTHEW CAMPOBASO: I feel that this new law is great and that it will lead to other states rendering marijuana legal for recreational use.

(APPLAUSE)

TACKITT: Although this new law may not physically affect us here at ASU, supporters and students feel that this will lead to other states following in these footsteps and eventually legalizing this substance elsewhere. Supporters feel that this tax revenue that they say will be produced from the purchasing of this drug will be good for society and hopefully help the economy. I guess were just going to have to wait and see how this new law sets in in these states and hopefully make a proper judgment then as to how other states will deal with this issue and come across an agreement as well.

Genre Analysis: Marijuana Legalization Faces Federal Hurdles

This audio essay would definitely be considered an informative interview, like something that would take place on a news talk show, covering brief summaries of the latest most popular news around the world. This podcast is very straight forward and to the point. It talks about the recent laws in some states since the election on Tuesday, November 6th, particularly the rent legalization of marijuana in the states of Washington and Colorado. Although this drug has been legalized for recreational uses, people feel that it "is the beginning of taking apart Prohibition one state at a time" and that it will "produce tax revenue for the state". Supporters feel that this tax revenue that they say will be produced from the purchasing of this drug will be good for society and hopefully help our economy. However, the public as a whole does not agree with these new laws.

Personally, I feel that an audio essay has a lot more to offer than your average essay. With an audio essay or podcast, one is able to get their point or opinion across through the use of words but also by the way they are able to express themselves with the tone of their voice. A podcast requires some form of interview so that the host can have their own opinion or sort of perspective on the subject they are choosing to inform the public on but then also have some back up and other opinions to support the one they have. Some hosts may seem a bit bias with their outlook, and these separate opinions and viewpoints that they find and include in the podcast help make it more accurate and informative in a way of arguing his or her point they are trying to get across.
With this podcast in particular, the topic this host has is an issue that is in much interest of the public as a whole because these are the first few states to legalize this particular substance for other reasons besides medical use and for as told, recreational use. Wendy Kaufman, byline in this podcast talks to state initiatives, medical technologists, engineers and even a former U.S. attorney to help get some variety of opinions to support her story. Without these other viewpoints, this podcast would be boring and would lose the listeners attention. The host of the story needs to be able to get their point across, state the particular argument their story is making and then have evidence and support to back up the side they are coming from. I chose this particular podcast just because its a very popular issue since the recent election and many people have seemed to be confused on all the regulations and rules this new law has brought with the legalization of this drug in these two states.

For project 3 i am going to focus on greek life and its significance and importance it has to campus life. I am going to interview some girls in my sorority, Alpha Phi, to help form my argument and also get support to back up my viewpoint on this organization as a whole.

Project 2 Reflection: Feedback

I thought project two was a lot easier than project one. Last time I had a really hard time looking through a lens in order to evaluate and analyze my place, where as in this project it was only required to evaluate a certain place and its aspects using the evidence and support of a few sources relating to our place on campus that we chose.

I feel that I did the best in the annotation portion of the project. It was required that we choose 4 parts of our place relating to our topic and I found it very easy to find those four aspects I was going to evaluate. For my project I chose the SRC or student recreation center and then focused mainly on the Elliptical machines, the snack bar, the pool and the intramural fields outside. My proposed topic was the importance of staying fit and exercising while staying healthy, so I found that describing these four regions of the SRC gave me enough evidence to illustrate the importance of the student recreation center to not only the students of ASU but also the community as a whole.

The part I struggled most with was the map portion of the project and getting it all put together. I thought that it would definitely be the easiest but I ended up pending most of my time trying to figure out how to make the map, edit it and then embed it to my blog post. However, once I got the process down, it was much easier to fix for my final draft!

This project showed me the importance of evidence in evaluations. Although ones opinion can be important, it doesn’t necessarily mean much unless it’s of worth and credible. I learned that finding credible sources isn’t as easy as it seems either, in order to find the exact type of evidence that you want, you have to make sure that you do enough research to find these sources in order to make sure that their perspective of the proposed topic you choose match yours, or else the sources aren’t worth much proof.

I feel that I crafted a pretty good evaluation at least on my behalf, I sort of struggled getting started in the beginning only because I wasn’t exactly sure what was required in order to make the evaluation good enough with enough support and evidence. In the future, I plan on taking a little more time in order to make sure that I have a well thought argument to help make my evaluation stronger. Also getting a little more feedback would help I think because I may not be able to see my mistakes and another review could lead me on the right track!
I think that learning to write a well written evaluation will help with other essays that I may have to write in the future just because evaluations are important for arguments and proving ones opinion with support of credible sources, and I am sure that I will have to write more of these types of essays in the future.

Project 2 Final

View Student Recreational Center in a larger map

The Student Recreation Center [SRC] provides a way for Arizona State Students to stay healthy and fit while away at school. “Schools have the opportunity to provide resources for teens and parents on healthy and wellness related issues” (Rooks 10) Exercise and wellness are very important to me. In my opinion and as a former athlete my perspective of staying fit is more of a necessity rather than an option. After playing sports my whole life and then stopping half way through high school I quickly realized how easy it was to stay in shape while playing sports, and how hard it was to keep motivated, stay in shape, go to the gym; and how easy it was while playing sports, training day in and day out. Once I started to get the hang of it, it became much more natural to me like a habit instead of the chore I dreaded each day. Working out and exercising daily not only keeps your body fit and in shape, but also calms the mind and helps bring out positive energy along with relieving stress. “Exercise essentially burns away the chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine that cause stress. At the same time, vigorous exercise releases endorphins into the system. Endorphins are morphine-like hormones that are responsible for the feeling of elation, or well being that distance runners get from running” (Hupston). In my opinion a healthy mind is a happy mind and one to become happy with yourself is to achieve those personal goals you set for yourself and stay dedicated. “Exercise not only improves your appearance. It can also improve your health” (Madden 1). The Student Recreation Center offers a way to stay fit and healthy on top of so much more. It’s a place to lay out by the pool and hang out with friends, it’s a place to run and get your mind off things, a place to gain motivation and a place to gain happiness as well by changing an unhealthy lifestyle into a healthy one. This center is more than beneficial for the students of ASU and the community. In order to find happiness, one must first be happy with themselves, and what’s a better way to learn to be happy with yourself than to exercise daily and not only make yourself look better but can also make yourself feel better mentally and emotionally.
[Burgundi Tackitt]

In this project I intend to evaluate different regions in the SRC that have a particular meaning to me and describe each areas importance to this center and the positive aspects of each. One area I chose to explore was SRC recreational pool. People wouldn't necessarily consider lying out by the pool to be very useful besides the fact that it can give one color and maybe some rest and relaxation from a long week, but it can also burn calories. It's almost like "killing two birds with one stone" you get the chance to relax and hang out with your friends, but also burn calories by laying out while the sun is beating down on you, causing you to sweat. The second area I plan to evaluate is the elliptical area upstairs. Running is a great way of exercising simply because it works out your entire body as a whole. As a little girl I used to absolutely despise running, but then as I got older I soon realized how in shape it keeps you and that it's really not as hard as it seems once you get the hang of it.  Third, I chose to evaluate the snack bar downstairs. Although it’s not open all hours that the gym is open, it is very helpful to those who utilize the gym. It offers many things like waters, fruits, vegetables, protein shake, etc. All of these things promote a healthy lifestyle and are sold to students and members to make sure they are working out while staying hydrated. Then finally I picked the SRC Intramural fields to evaluate. The SRC fields are home to many practices late at night during the week and also games for the intramural sports. These fields provide a place to play sports either recreationally or professionally and help to keep people in shape by offering large amount of. It's very motivating to see people in such amazing shape; I strive to remain looking physically healthy, and it pushes me to work even harder to reach my personal goal.

Exercise and wellness as I previously stated before is very important to me. Although it gets very tiring going to the gym every day, it's not as much of a drag anymore because I know that I will gain results with each workout and eventually reach my personal fitness goals. Getting some daily exercise not only a way to keep in shape and stay healthy, it's also an escape from the everyday stress of schoolwork, life and other pressures that people are constantly dealing with. There are major health issues facing this particular generation due to the increased use of technology and it is very important to make sure that you are staying healthy and eating right in order to live a long and prosperous life. “There is growing public concern that this generation will suffer severe consequences if lifestyle changes are not implemented nationwide” (Rooks, 45). This is why exercise is so important and a center like ours at ASU is such a great example of the importance and necessity of exercising. I whole-heartedly believe that the SRC at ASU was an amazing investment. With all that it has to offer, it’s hard to prove that this center isn’t useful for students. Without the Student Recreation Center, students would have limited access to working out and continuing to live a healthy lifestyle.
