In this project I intend to evaluate different regions in the SRC that have a particular meaning to me. One area I choose to explore will be the SRC recreational pool. People wouldn't necessarily consider laying out by the pool to be very useful besides the fact that it can give one color and maybe some relief and relaxation from a long week, but it can also burn calories. It's almost like "killing two birds with one stone" you get the chance to relax and hang out with your friends, but also burn calories by laying out while the sun is beating upon you, causing you to sweat. The second area I plan to evaluate is the elliptical area upstairs. Running is a great way of exercising simply because it works out your entire body as a whole. As a little girl I used to absolutely despise running, but then as I got older I soon realized how in shape it keeps you and that it's really not as hard as it seems once you get the hang of it. I also chose to evaluate the snack bar downstairs. Although its not open all hours that the gym is open, it is very helpful to those who attend the gym. It offers many things from waters, fruits, vegetables, protein shakes and many more. All of these things promote a healthy lifestyle and are sold to students and members to make sure they are working out while staying hydrated at the same time. Then finally I picked the circuit room to evaluate. The circuit room consists of many different machines to help work out the entire body and or individual parts as well. This room contains a physical therapy room as well, which is very useful to athletes who have injuries due to sports they play. The circuit room has a different environment compared to say the elliptical section upstairs. It's a lot quieter and people in there are a lot more focused on their perceptions of their bodies. It's very motivating to see people you envy to look like physically and only pushes me to work even harder to reach this personal goal of mine.
Exercise and wellness like I previously stated before is very important to me. Although it gets very tiring going to the gym every day, it's not as much of a drag anymore because I know that I see results soon and eventually reach my personal fitness goals. It's not only a way to keep in shape and stay healthy, it's also an escape from the everyday stress and school work that I am constantly dealing with. if I had the time to go more than once a day, I would definitely put that opportunity to good use, however that is not the case.
Throughout this project I will go into much more depth onto how I view the SRC and the important of staying fit and healthy by evaluating these different aspects as well as including my personal viewpoints with some back up from my different sources.
Some sources I may use all contain information on exercise and the importance of staying healthy and its positive effects on the body. They will help me prove some of my points because they are liable sources and will also help me gain more knowledge on my particular topic. The sources are listed below.

I like the approach that you are taking with this project. I too chose the student recreation center, but that does not really matter. We are pretty much in the same boat both being former athletes and using the SRC to stay in shape. The part that I found interesting about your project is the circuit room, I am interested to see what you have to say about that part of the SRC. Also the snack bar area, which could be difficult to write about, could be another interesting part of your project. I wish you the best of luck with the project because, I do not know about you, this project really snuck up on me.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I am a lazy butt and I have not seriously worked out in the gym in a couple months, but I admire that health and exercise are important to you. I do think that your approach has some pros and cons to it. The pros are that you will have an easy time evaluating the various areas and places in the SRC and I also think that doing your project on one place will be convenient. However, even though it will be convenient, I do not know how you will create a map considering it is just one place on campus. You can however create your own map of the inside of the SRC. Good job so far and hope everything goes well!
ReplyDeleteI think that the SRC is a great place to evaluate. You will be able to open the eyes of others who maybe seem intimidated by the SRC. I agree that college brings a lot of changes. A lot of the incoming freshmen are former athletes, like myself. I also relied on my sport for all of my exercise. Now that I don't cheer anymore I feel kind of lost in the exercising world. I really like how you mention that laying out by the pool is a great way to 'kill two birds with one stone.' I personally love laying out by the pool and tanning, who doesn't? And I love hanging out with my friends relaxing. It is great to know that I can burn calories by laying out and hanging out with friends. I would also mention how swimming is an amazing way to exercise and it feels good to swim in the pool. It works a lot of your muscles and its great on a hot day.
ReplyDeleteI know first hand how going to college can change patterns of health and wellness. In high school I would go to the gym everyday but being at ASU that has changed greatly. My motivation to go has greatly gone down. I think you have a good basis for your project, you have room to analyze each of those place in the SRC and why they are important to you as well as others. The only problem I see is that it may be hard to really analyze each place because they are all so closely related. Maybe step out of the SRC and add other places on campus where you can exercise like the SRC field or the Barrett Gym.

ReplyDeleteI think that you will have a good topic, and a lot to work with. One piece of advice that I can give you is that instead of talking about your personal connection with the different areas of the SRC, and analyzing it, state your argument and criteria. Then back it up with the sections of the SRC that you chose.
ReplyDeleteOne piece of criteria that would make a gym good is how new the equipment is. You could then take a picture of the treadmills, and talk about how nice and new they are. This could be one of the four spaces that you need. The trick to a good evaluation is stating what makes a good gym, and then talking about whether or not the SRC fulfills the criteria that you have laid out.
I really enjoy your topic because I am doing something very similar. I'm observing different places on campus that students are physically active (including the SDFC) and seeing a correlation between sports and health among students. Unlike me, you are going into a much deeper depth of the SDFC which is really fascinating. My one piece of advice is to find more places on campus to observe since you will be making a map and you will have to have more than just one location. But right now you have really good path of what you need to do, since you said you will go into detail talking about the elliptical area, weight area, and swimming pool. I wish you the best of luck on this project.
ReplyDeleteI think you are on to a great start with your project. I’m not doing anything with the SRC but I am doing something fitness related. I think my favorite area that you chose would be the snack bar. That’s original of you for which many people wouldn’t even think of using that. I agree with on that fact that it promotes keeping a healthy lifestyle because your diet is just as important as your workouts. The pool area is also very original many people don’t realize how much weight you can lose from just sweating alone. It is very true that once you get into the habit of going to the gym everyday, it is much easier to gain motivation. I know for myself on the days I can’t go, I feel icky. It takes 21 days to break or start a habit (feel free to use that if you need to).
