Evaluation: Revenge

This new top hit show Revenge is an American television drama/thriller series that airs Wednesday nights at 10:00 pm on ABC starring Madeleine Stowe and Emily Vancamp. It first showed up on television on September 21, 2011 and has been a hit series since! Just like any television show these days Revenge consists of strong intensity to keep you on the edge of your seat and to keep it's viewers watching every Wednesday night. However, the plot of this particular series isn't like any other series that I have seen at least. Emily Vancamp stars as the main character in this show, Amanda Clark. She plays the role of a very well off young woman, living in the house in the beautiful Hamptons she once grew up in as a little girl until the day her life chained completely for the worst. During one of her last few night in this house as a young girl her father was taken away and framed for a crime he did not commit and was unfortunately murdered before he ever got the chance to prove his own innocence. Although, years later, and foster home after foster home, Amanda was soon encountered by one of her fathers old friends who soon proved to her his innocence and gave star Amanda Clark a trunk full of secrets leading Emily right down the path of revenge and insight onto who framed him. Now that she is older and wiser, she switches identities with one of her cell mates she met in Juvenille she plans for revenge on all those who affected her life. Amanda, who now goes by Emily one by one plots and takes care of the lose ends that are in her life. Emily focuses the root of her hatred to the Hamptons on the Grayson family who knows it all when it comes to Emily's horrible past. Just like any other thriller series or movie, this show keeps you on the edge of your seat at all time. During every commercial you are constantly thinking the whole time "What is going to happen next?!" or they leave you thinking something happened when really you come to find out it did not. Suspense filled moments and a very detailed story line are what keep viewers watching shows like this now a days. Writers and script writers have to keep the viewers and the ratings up, so they are constantly thinking of what to add next in order to keep everyone interested. I think that one of the reasons this show became so popular so fast was not just because of the storyline, but also because it's not just another one of the reality shows that seem to be airing more than usual. This show has some some sort of s mix between reality and mystery with even some unrealistic details, but it only makes it that much more interesting because nobody is going to want a boring show. This is one of the reasons some people are so into supernatural shows about vampires and wear-wolves, we all know these things aren't real, although it catches our interest because it's sort of an escape from the everyday reality were faced with. As unrealistic some shows may be, television is still really popular and this tv series world is becoming very competitive. As fresh and new as Revenge is in the never-ending list of television shows that air these days I believe  Revenge has a very good chance of making it through the cut due to its popularity ratings and such intense story line. The actors and actresses are great, the setting is intriguing and the plot is full of suspense and vengeance, who wouldn't enjoy this show?!

  1. I have never heard of the show before but from your evaluation of the show it does seem very interesting. I am glad that you gave a plot analysis or else I would have never known what you were talking about. This show seems very interesting I and thought you hit the nail right on the head when you said the writers always leave us in suspense with the commercial breaks or endings of the shows that leaves us wanting more. For example I was watching White Collar, I do not know if you have ever heard of it, but at the end of each episode they always left it with a cliffhanger and I had to watch the next episode. Which is smart thing for them to do because like you said it is all about ratings and viewers, and if they can bring people to tune in every week then the show will survive and if not then it will go to the dumps. I will most likely watch some episodes of Revenge now that you introduced it to me and I want to really see what it is all about and maybe become one of those viewers that keep the show around.

  2. I have heard about this show and debated about starting to watch it myself. You make it sound even more appealing than the commercials and trailers shown on the television have done. I really enjoyed how you told us, the audience, just enough to catch us up to speed on what is going on, but without giving too much away. It intrigues us further to actually start the series ourselves. I know that for myself I will probably try to watch a few episodes of it to see if it is for me. After all, suspense makes the show that much better. Suspense is the reason why I take time to watch my favorite show “Once Upon a Time” even though I am already pretty short on time as it is with homework, classes, and other tasks that keep me busy.

Just like Jackson, I’m glad you talked about the plot more than you did about analyzing the character, Amanda. However, I would have liked to get to know Amanda a little better, and learn more about her psyche. I guess that just gives me even more reason to go watch the show, right? It is still fairly new, so there is plenty of time for anyone to get to actually know the characters and learn more about all the twists and turns that will be presented through out the length of the series. Thank you for selling the show better than the trailers, because I’m sure that more people will be interested in watching it now.

  3. I used to hear about this show from everyone including my teachers in high school. I was hesitant to watch because I’m not into melodramatic mystery shows, but I did decided to watch it when I found my parents watching it in the living room. I do agree that it is very suspenseful and that the writers do a very good job of creating a fantasy. When I started watching the show and I completed the first episode, all I could think of was how big of a badass Emily/Amanda was and how the actress who plays her has an innocent look to her and how this characteristic contrasted her personality and how this just made the overall main character more dynamic. I enjoy the fact that Emily is always in control and that the whole plotline seems almost too good to be true. Another show that plays well on blurring the lines between fantasy and reality is The Legend of the Seeker. It’s a show about a man named Richard and basically how he has to defeat the evil king and the show documents all of his fights and struggles along the way to saving the world. The biggest difference between these shows however is that Revenge is more realistic and The Legend of the Seeker is a more supernatural take on fantasy. Overall, I really liked your evaluation of Revenge and I actually agree with a lot of what you said. The chronology of the show is somewhat confusing so I applaud you for making it easier to understand

  4. This show does ring a bell; I know I have seen the preview on the television however I had never paid much attention to it. Had I known that it was that interesting I would have paid more attention. You described the show very well, I really enjoyed reading your evaluation of it. You made the television show seem very interesting, without spoiling any of it. Perhaps if I ever see it on the TV I will watch a few episodes. One thing I really enjoyed about your article is that instead of focusing it on how much you love the show, you actually described the plot and the character or else I would have not been nearly as much convinced to watch it. I also liked how you left me with many questions, now I am wondering how Amanda traded identities and specifically how she goes about getting revenge and what resources she used in order to do this. I like this a lot because it makes me a lot more apprehensive and curious as to what goes on in the show and she goes about doing this. I love mysteries myself, and this seems like such an enjoyable show tow watch.

  5. Even though I have never heard of this television show before, you gave extremely detailed plot summary, which made me get a really good understanding of this show. After reading your plot analysis, I am very interested in watching this show and I normally don't watch too many tv shows. I like the suspense aspect of the show when they leave you hanging at the end of every commercial and episode. It draws the viewers to watch more episodes. I also agree with you that this show would draw people because it isn't the typical reality tv show now-a-days. I would much rather watch this show then a reality tv show. What I liked about your evaluation was that you remained very unbiased and kept your main personal views out of the evaluation and just analyzed the plot and what viewers think of the show. I also agree with you that because of the intriguing storyline, this show has the ability to be one of the top shows on the air. An example of another popular show with an intense and intriguing storyline is the American Horror Story, so I believe Revenge can become just as popular.
